Am I a Candidate for Dental Implants?

Most people are good candidates for dental implants! If you are missing a tooth or teeth (either due to injury or disease), then considering dental implants is a good option for you. A good candidate will meet with their dental specialist about meeting the following criteria:

  • general good health
  • healthy gums
  • enough healthy bone to anchor the implant to the jaw
  • a commitment to good oral hygiene

Some people, however, are probably not good candidates for dental implants. They are:

  • people with a chronic illness such as diabetes, hemophilia and significant immune deficiencies
  • people who take certain medications such as steroids or drugs that suppress the immune system
  • people who have receive radiation treatment of the head or neck area
  • heavy smokers
  • pregnant women
  • alcohol or substance abusers
  • people who severely grind their teeth

Be sure to have your dental professional evaluate your situation before ruling implants out.

To see if you are a candidate for dental implants, firstly make an appointment with one of our dental professionals.  He or she will set up a team of other professionals to do an evaluation. This team will consist of the dental specialist (a dentist with special training with dental implants, an oral surgeon or a periodontist) and a restorative dentist (who will make the crowns, bridges or dentures that the implants will support). Your initial evaluation will include an examination of your mouth and teeth and a thorough review of your medical history. It will also include dental x-rays and possibly even a CT scan. This will help to determine the amount of healthy bone left in your jaw which will, in turn, determine your treatment plan.
