Proper Tooth Brushing Techniques | Bentsen Goodrich & Irvin DDS

Using the proper technique and doing a thorough job when you brush your teeth are two of the most important issues of tooth brushing. To get the most thorough cleaning, brush 2-3 minutes using the following techniques:

  • Most importantly, brush your teeth two to three times per day using a soft-bristled toothbrush to prevent gum damage! If you like using a hard-bristled toothbrush, try switching to one that is just a bit softer at first.
  • Be sure to use a toothpaste that is ADA certified and has flouride in it!
  • Use short up and down strokes when brushing (don’t use the ‘back and forth’ method!)
  • Replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months for best results.
  • Brush the outer surface, the inner surface and the ‘chewing’ surface of each tooth.
  • Apply just enough pressure to feel the bristles against the gums. If you are squashing the bristles, you’re brushing too hard.
  • Place the head of your toothbrush with the tips of the bristles at a 45-degree-angle to the gumline when brushing.
  • Brush your tongue for a clean breath and to remove any bacteria!
